Mixing Patterns 101

One way of being playful with your outfits is to mix up your patterns. It looks so intimidating I know, but if you know some simple rules to follow...it's as easy as rock'n that plain tee with jeans you're always doing...

Key Points:

There should be ONE common dominant color that is in common with both patterns. This will make the combo make sense. This a rule for the pattern mixing beginners...

Vary the scale or proportion of the pattern (large with a medium print or small with a medium)

If you feel like it's needed, break the patterns up with a common neutral.

Make sure the patterns aren't competing. If you follow the above rules...this shouldn't happen.

So give a try! If you're not sure how it looks send me a picture and I'll let you know if you look like bozo or beautiful.

Tall/Full Figure/Straight/Long Body/Short(er) legs Body Type

So I had a client the other day who is beautiful! She's tall 5'8" and a straight full figure body type. I just fell in love with her because at a size 16/18 she's very comfortable with her body type. She eats well and exercises no less than three days a week so she's doing what she has to stay fit and healthy. Her issue wasn't that she wanted to be a size 0 or look different than herself. She just didn't know HOW to dress for her body type.
After reviewing her body type I concluded that she's has a tall, straight, full figure but the twist is, she is proportionately longer in her body than her legs. This changed everything she'd thought about what she should be wearing. Just like so many do, my client had done some research on the internet and in books to see what her body type was and what she should be wearing and when she tried to buy and wear the items that the books and 'experts' were recommending, they just didn't feel or look right. This is because 1. most often I find that if someone is a 'full figure' (size 14+) then you're suppose to wear long A-line shapes and 2. She wasn't taking into consideration her proportions. Which I find to be a key component that is almost always missed and not addressed in those 'Find your Personal Style' books. So here is the breakdown of what she should be considering having this kind of body type. I hope this information can shed some light on anyone who has a similar body type.

Key Points

Elongate legs= Show more leg
Visually shorten appearance of upper body= wear tops that hit no longer than the top of your hip bone. NEVER cover your crotch!
Must WEAR SHAPE to look like you HAVE shape= You are what you wear. You wear square you look square. You wear big and over sized...your going to look big and over sized. etc...
Soften the shoulder=being tall and a full figure, you can often have a broad shoulder. Softening this feature will give you a more feminine appeal. (And you'll fell less like a full back)

What to Wear:

Jackets that are A-line from the empire line of your body (under your boobs) out will flatter and draw the eye up, making your legs look longer.

Also jackets that have a belt or waist detail will have the same effect.

Choose tops that sit no longer than on top of your hip bone. This will show more leg..thus, making your legs look LONGER!
The center front ruffle can draw the eye up too and away from any area you're not feeling so confident about. wink.

Longer sweaters are all good but make sure you can belt it. Again drawing that eye UP elongating your legs, Also keep the front of the sweater open so you can see the full front of your body. This will elongate the your body too and not visually cut it up.
The asymmetry of this sweater too adds shape which is what you want!

Have some FUN! You don't have to wear solid colors and dark denim if you have a straight body type. Wear some denim that have personality. Shading can create shape for you where you might be lacking. Especially in the rear end. To make your legs look their longest make sure they fall as long as where your toe meets your foot in the shoe that you're wearing. That will create the longest leg line for you.

Dresses that are uniform in color or print will elongate your body and balance out the in balance of your proportions whether you be long bodied and short legged or long legged and short bodied.

Yes, being 5'8" or taller you can rock a maxi. A maxi with a contrast or design element at the empire line will be most flattering. The center stripe is slimming and elongating and most important, the dress falls flat and away from the body. BEWARE of gathering around the empire line. It can sometimes be a flattering element for your body type but it can also make you look like you're expecting. You have to just try on to see for yourself.

So there are some suggestions for you to look for if you have a Tall, Full Figure, Straight, Long Body, Short(er) leg, body type.

Just dropped into Buffalo Exchange and Target the other day on a 'Me Time' break from the kids and found some cute things! Check 'em out...

Like my lack of will power with boots, I have a serious weakness for anything chevron stripe. I want them in my home, on my clothes. Maybe I should shave them onto the sides of my kids heads....I digress....
When I saw this top I loved it! Especially how it kind of wanted to drape off one of my shoulders. Made me feel kind of sexy but still classy.
I'll wear this with my American Apparel knit pants that are, yes, MC hammer-ish. Or I'll rock it with my high waist bell jeans and my black and wood platform sandals....hmmm
I'll also like this with just my cut off jeans and some black gladiators.
YES that IS three outfits...so it IS worth the $19!

Isn't this pendant SO cool! My nanny saw an owl. I saw wings but taking another look I see two birds. I LOVE that it seems like something different to whomever is checking it out. I'm going to have to hit up a bead store to find the right beads to make this into a necklace. Though, that will require having the time to make it...stay tuned.

LOVE the texture, the size..I'll be wearing this with just a tee and jeans...or maybe a maxi sundress...or I just rediscovered an old black crepe Jcrew dress I had hidden away...SO many things to wear with it....not enough days. wink.

The Break Down: My Habit Rachel Pally Dress $78 I got it for $50

I'm always telling my clients..if you're going to buy something it must fit into the following criteria:
It has to FIT you
It has to FLATTER you and your figure
It has to have FUNCTION in your lifestyle
and it has to make you feel FABULOUS!

So I got my dress in the mail yesterday...and I tried it on..here's how those same criteria broke down for me. (Same rules apply... right;)

FIT: The dress has a built in bra that fits me great. Not too big or small. The straps aren't buckling and the armhole isn't too loose or tight.
The body skims my body, not too loose and baggy and not hugging anywhere.
FLATTER: Usually bright white isn't the most flattering on me but the color confetti in this dress are all colors that flatter my coloring.
I do not love my legs so this is just long enough where it covers my legs but do you see how the skirt goes up on each side. This 'jersey' cut helps create shape for me and elongates my leg (shows more skin) which is good if I go with a longer dress.
TIP: To create the most flattering shape on a drawstring dress gather the fabric to the center front and then again to the center back so the dress lays smooth on the sides.

FUNCTION: I'm a Mother of two young little boys and a Personal Style Consultant so I'm either running around chasing little people or I'm eyeball deep in a clients closet or with them in a dressing room. I need to be able to get on the floor and play cars for hours and/or on the floor explaining to a client where a hem should hit on them. In other words I need MOVEMENT! This dress, being modal its stretchy and comfortable so I can move and stretch. I can bend down and reach forward without tearing a seam or showing off the color of my underwear to people who don't want to see it.
FEEL FABULOUS: So in the end...the dress fits me, flatters my figure, has function in my lifestyle but the fleeting question...does it make me feel FABULOUS? It DOES! I LOVE it...I feel sassy and cute. It's colorful which I need in my cream infested wardrobe. I can dress it up and I can dress it down. So you bet I'm going to keep it:)

The blue stone LOOKS authentic..not like plastic (which it is)
The construction is per what you'd find at a boutique.
The gold is brushed and not too shiny
The gold is the right color gold..not too yellow or pale

It's so difficult to even consider leather and wool right now let alone boots and outerwear but these deals and the savings are too much to resist! Here are some of my picks and tips from the Nordstrom catalog. You know I'm going to give pointers on who and how to wear these items too. Shop stylishly and keep me posted on what you get and how you ROCK IT!

Oh don't you just want to wrap yourself up in this! And you look like a million for $98.90! Nordstrom Collection Ribbed Knit Ruana
Who: This is such a volumous garment. Remember you are what you wear so you'll look this large and grand if you choose to rock this. That means you should be slight in frame. Also you don't want this shawl to wear you so I'd recommend this for someone who is 5'8" or taller.
How: Whenever you wear volume up top you want to balance that out with something slim on the bottom. I'd recommend a skinny jean, legging or even a leather skinny pant...
Shoes...you can wear a flat or a bootie or a knee high boot even.

Okay this to me looks a little costume-y for me. Don't get me wrong I totally have a little boho to my style but this looks like you're headed to a 70's party. But separetely I think they could be SO cool!
Who: Dress Sanctuary 'Greenwhich' $99.90: You've got have some legs to rock this dress! If you don't like your bare legs you can always rock with tights! This dress would look so great on a boy or straight shaped body type either tall or petite (if the bell sleeves aren't too overwhelming and swallow you up)
Vest Santurary 'New Rockin' Natalie Faux Fur Vest $98.90: Oh SO Jane Berkin! This vest is LONG so I'd suggest you be the same to rock this. The only time this would look good on a petite is if it's worn like in the picture and with a short skirt or dress.
How: Dress: Pair with black or brown tights and either an suede taupe ankle boot or a black motorcycle boot. A knee high frye boot would be pretty classic too! I also think a tassled pump would be adorable! See below:

This is one item I think I HAVE to have! The faux shearling vest. Echo $49.90
Who: This again is a little long in the front so I'd recommend for the 5'7" and taller girl. Make sure this vest doesn't hide your shape but actually gives or compliments you. It could be great for just about any body type as long as you've got a little height to balance the length.
How: I love the way they styled this in the photo, with just a simple white tee. It's a stand alone stylish piece so it's easy to pair with something more simple. On the other hand the lines are so clean that you could easily pair this vest with a bolder, busier printed top or dress and it won't 'compete'. Pair with a plaid collared blouse (not tucked in) and some skinny or straight leg jeans with wool and leather booties for a Portland 'Rugged' look.

LOVE the colors in this dress! So fun and flirty. A great dres for the transition from Summer to Fall. The cut of the dress though is something to be concerned with.

Who: I like the empire cute of this dress but the gathered fabric in the front of the dress can be dangerous. If you have a little something to hide or camouflage in the tummy area...this dress can make you look more like you have MORE in that area because of the gathers. This dress is best for someone who has a straight/boy shaped body type both tall and this dress would be great for a petite! Especially if you have a long torso and short legs!
How: You could rock this dress with cute little flats, a pump or a knee high boot! Rock the faux shearling vest with this! wink.

Would YOU rock a leather pant? I wouldn't count it out. Kenna-T Skinny leather pant $349.90

Who: If you are daring enough to rock this trend and you love your legs..then I say ROCK IT! Always check the placement of the pockets...grab your butt, turn around..are the pockets centered under your palm? That's a great fit.
How: Pair with an oversized but not too big and baggy denim shirt and a pair of black ankle boots or a tassled pump, even a mary jane pump would work. I also love how they styled this photo with a silky top and vest. A play on texture and color.

Are you cardi obsessed? This modern take on the cape is perfect for someone who loves the look and feel of a cardigan but needs an update. This shape is so modern. Mackage 'Delia' cape $389.90
Who: This sweater is so great for someone who has narrow shoulders and who's petite OR tall! Yay.
How: Ugh. How NOT?:) This sweater is great with a silky blouse like in the picture...or even with a cami under and with a pair of dress slacks OR jeans! It would be striking with a pencil skirt or over a shaped sheath dress. Perfect to wear casually or to the office! Worth the investment.

Here they are!! Oh boots boots and more boots! Ugh I'm in HEAVEN!:)
Who: Boutique 9 'floyde' tall boot with two buckles $159.90 (top left): Great for someone TALL this boot will cut you off at the top and at the ankle. You have to have the 'real estate' to break your leg up this much.
Vera Wang Lavender 'Kipp' $279.90 and Frye Carmen Back Lace boot $199.90 (top right in gray, bottom middle in fawn): These short boots are great again for someone with narrow long legs. This length can cut a leg off in an awkward place. Make sure it doesn't hit at the widest part of your calf muscle.
Fry 'Jane Strappy' $239.90 and 'Mellissa Button Back Zip' $219.90 (botton left and bottom right): These knee high boots are great for anyone about 5' 6" and taller. Shorter you may need a shorter/tall boot that doesn't cut you off so high on the leg.

And if the classic riding boot is more your thing...

Who: Cole Haan 'Air Whitley' buckle boot, leather and stretch suede $229.90 (top left): This boot could be great if you have a very muscular calf muscle because the adjustable buckle and stretch suede. Corso Como 'San Angelo' quilted boot $169.90 (bottom left): This is a great, stylish and classic boot but not good if you have thick or heavy legs. Vince Camuto 'Bilco' tall boot $159.90 (middle) : is a beautiful boot perfect if you've got long legs. LOVE the color and hardware. And lastly Via Spiga 'Kacey' riding boot $259.90: THE classic riding boot. Looks good on most any body type 5'6" or taller and your legs are average to longer than average.

Trend ALERT! Grey wool flannel paired with your favorite color leather! UGH this looks expensive but casual...just screams exquisite to me:)
Who: Cole Haan Buckle boot $249.90 (top left): Great if you have a slender LONG leg because of the width of this. Great to wear with a sweater dress....or with jeans and cashmere boyfriend cardigan...oh...I think I must own these...
Boutique 9 'Nexxie' peep toe bootie $89.90: Great on anyone who has a slender ankle. Perfect to wear with tights and dress or skirt to work or with skinny jeans or even some leather pants...:)
Nice Camuto 'Jerrell' High Heel Bootie $109.90 (bottom right): Ugh I love me a sleek bootie that hits high on the foot! These would look great with a dress or skirt, opaque tights and any flattering top! You have to be able to rock a heel though, not just balance...but walk. Steven by SM 'Madee' flat $79.90 (very bottom): Great for the shoe wearer who doesn't dig heels. Great with any slack or denim even an A-line skirt that hits right above the knee.

I've had a few clients contact me over the past few days asking me if it's OK to wear Red, White AND Blue on the 4th? My answer is..YES of course it's okay! The fashion gods will NOT strike you down with lightning if you leave the house on the 4th rock'n your Red,White AND Blue..but IS it stylish? Not really.

It's borderline cheesy. In likeness with heading to a holiday party sparkling more than a decorated tree or knocking on the door of Grandma's for Thanksgiving dressed like a pilgram. Now if that's your thing..than I'm NOT talking about you so stop 'tsking'. Rock your stripes. Wear the American flag likeness with glory!

It can be adorable to dress your kids up too! Go for it. Nothing cuter than little people in stars and stripes:)

But for me, if you're looking to look festive but NOT like a wavy 'Old Glory' than just take one of those colors out of the equation. Rock a red and white stripe..grounded with a black instead of navy. Or navy and white and rock a yellow for a POP.

Rompers. Are they for everyone? What I love about them is they are an instant outfit. What I hate is they NEVER fit a tall person! The rise is always too short. But then again, I don't have legs to rock and boy do you need toned legs to rock if you're going to wear this style. Who can rock this style? The petite population! Rompers are SO cute on anyone under the heighth of 5'4" who have legs to show off!
Now the question that still has waffling is 'Are rompers appropriate for a woman of a certain age?' I'd say..IF you can rock a romper and NOT look like you're trying too hard than go for it! I have friends and clients who are over 40 who can KILL in a romper but I've also seen women who absolutely look ridiculous. You know who you are! So IF you can rock a romper here are some outfit suggestions.

Just like the shape of a shirt or the line of a skirt can change the shape of someone's body type, a purse can do just the same. Where and how you carry your purse can compliment or exploit parts of someone's body shape or proportions.
A good rule to stick by would be: Wear the size that you are..petite: petite, large:large and wear your purse in the area where you may want more attention. Avoid wearing your purse in areas where you want less attention.

Pear Shaped:
Your shoulders are more narrow than your hips. Your carry your weight in your hips and thighs. Your body or torso may be longer than your legs in proportion.

TIP:You want to avoid having your handbag hit you in line of the widest part of your proportion. This means nothing that sits on or by your hips or thighs.

What purse should you wear if you're Pear Shaped by dahlstyle featuring leather handbags

Inverted Triangle and Chesty: Your shoulders are broader than your hips. You have a bra cup size D or larger.

TIP: You want to avoid wearing your handbag under your arm AT the chest level. Anything that crosses over your chest will exploit your chest as well. Purses will flatter you most carried by hand whether they be a handbag or clutch.

TIP: You want to avoid anything that has buckles or detail on the purse strap that will add volume or attention to your widest part, your shoulders. A messenger or hip slug bag will help balance out your hips with your shoulders.

My family and I hit the Portland Rose Festival this weekend and while my family explored some of the ships I manned the strollers and people watched. I couldn't believe my eyes. Almost every Mother I saw was wearing the same outfit! I swear to god!

I'm a mother of two boys, one of which is still a baby and if I can find time to wear clothing that's practical, comfortable and still stylish so can these Mamas. I wondered, maybe these Mom's feel like they have to wear that. When did we give up our right to look and feel stylish as Mother's and why is this becoming a epidemic? Style is all about what you choose to wear. I get it...you have to be comfortable, you have to be practical but aren't you allowed to still look and feel beautiful? Just say'n.

I remember, early 90's wearing ONLY men's jeans. They were long enough (I'm 5'11") and the just slouchy effect was party of that grunge look. Who knew how BAAAAD they looked! Ugh the rise 3" too long the load it looked like I'd taken in the back.. .SO not flattering.
Of course NOW there are 'boyfriend' cut jeans that are slim and flattering for us to choose. So why do we still feel like our 'boyfriend' jeans have to be HUGE and BAGGY and unflattering?

When it comes to the distressed shading...it's common in any jean but high contrast (light to dark) shading looks phony and staged. Plus it can make your thigh and butt look HUGE! Nuff said?

Holes and 'worn' areas should look natural and not like you took a razor blade to your jeans. I don't know it what situations your jeans would get 'worn' like this?

On the same topic...don't make us look at our jean wear and wonder just how your jeans ONLY got worn out there...you know what I mean!
A little hole at the knee and some wear in the thing and butt...good..only wear at the knee.....yup. Nuff said.

Now take away that this twit of a model is like as size 00 (ya they have that..RIDICULOUS!) but here is what a boyfriend jean should look like.

Slim along the lines of your body. Not too tight/loose
Fits your rise, thighs and length
Uniform in color or distress. Not just on the middle thigh and butt.
Rolled up but a couple of times. Not 17 times to get the length you want.

Capris and Ankle Lengthed Pants: Who, How and With What?

I don't think I've ever gone into a client's closet and NOT seen a pair of capris or ankle length pants. And if I have to break the bad news that this silhouette isn't the most flattering for their figures I get this look from them like I'm speaking pig latin. I mean how could capris NOT be flattering! They are everywhere, sold in every store that offers women's clothing.

My response: Just because the store carries it, doesn't mean it's right for you.

Here are some tips on who should wear a cropped pant and how to wear them.

Who:

Listen. You ARE what you WEAR so if you wear a cropped pant your legs will look...what?...CROPPED. That's not to say that they look bad on everyone but they DO look unflattering on those that already have a shorter leg.

Short Legs Long Torso

When you have the imbalance of a long torso and shorter leg, the way to create balance is to visually shorten the torso and lengthen the leg. You want to do this by:

Wearing pants that hit at least at the top of your foot but most preferably your pant should hit where your to toe meets your foot in the shoe that you're wearing.
IF you need to wear a cooler option..choose a short instead of a capri and try to show as much leg as you feel comfortable with (while still being appropriate for your age and occasion)

So if your body type is balanced top/bottom or you've got long legs and short torso then a capri or ankle length pant could be a flattering option for you.

How:


Capri that hits at widest part of calf

AVOID your pant hitting you at the widest part of your calf. It cuts you in a thick area...which will make you look...you got it..THICK.

Ok..your capri isn't hitting at the widest part of your calf but if you're curvy and you don't want to exploit your curves. AVOID high contrast shading or distressing at the middle of your thigh and center of the butt. This shading visually excentuates any and all the curves you're rock'n. There is a way to compliment your curves and still rock a capri.


Dark and Uniform in color: Old Navy

Uniform in color and dark in saturation are the most flattering for anyone but especially those of you have curvy figures. It creates a long uninterrupted line.

TIP: Remember that pockets on your denim should hit in the middle of your palms when you grab your own butt. Any higher..not good, wider not good, a lot lower, not good.

Talbots

If you choose a longer version or an ankle pant then you want to make sure your pant sits on top of your ankle and it's hitting it or below the ankle or you'll look like you shrunk your pants.

The rule I tell my clients is, the pant should hit no longer than one finger width above your ankle bone and not higher than two fingers.

If you have longer legs but thick ankles...this length is not right for you.

TIP: You never want anything to hit you where you don't want attention.

Boxy Wide NOT CUTE!

Boxy wide capris...don't look good on anyone. Goes back to that same rule I talked about first: You ARE what you WEAR! Boxy, wide...not exactly what you want to look like right?

AVOID: Pairing high ankle wrapped sandals with your capris or ankle length pants, unless you have legs to your eyeballs. This style can cut up the lower leg proportions too much.

Since you should be wearing a straight cut or skinny silhouette when rock'n a capri you can juxtapose the skinny with a fuller top.

TIP: Make sure whatever to you choose it doesn't swamp your proportion.

What is the DEAL with holes in my tee shirts?

Finding a tee shirt that fits well, feels well and flatters is a tough task. What's more frustrating than, when, you find your new shirt, or the one you've had for like a month..has a hole right near the belly button area! UGH! I hear this complaint from my clients daily but the funny thing is...I personally haven't experienced this and I wear tee shirts almost every day. Why am I NOT getting holes and others are? So I did some research and this is what I found...

1. Tee shirts are now being made with extra soft cotton and woven lighter and less dense into our fabric. Ever seen your tee's referred to as 'tissue tee'? This is being done because we want our tee's to feel soft on our skin and drape more along our bodies. The issue is softer the cotton, the lighter the weave, the weaker the fabric is, so if you have an area of your tee shirt that rubs against, say your jeans, or a belt or your jacket zipper..it's going to wear a hole. I found that I almost always tuck the front of my tees into my jeans so they aren't covering my belt buckle...and I don't wear jackets with zippers...(dunno why...just a blazer kinda girl) a solution...hmmm?

2. Granite counter tops have become a staple in most homes built or remodeled in the past 10 years and if you run your hands along the edge of your counter top you may feel a rough end to your tile. AND if you lean against your counter top as I've learned many people do...your tee may snag at this location. I noticed, maybe because I'm giant (5' 11") when I lean on the counter tops it hits me at my hips, not my where my tee shirt is...

So if you're having this issue...try NOT wearing zipper jackets, tucking the front of your tees into your pants and NOT leaning against your granite counter tops....and you may save a tee or two...let me know if it works for you...

Oh PS...I usually only buy J Crew Painter Tees....which they don't make anymore..btw:)

Inspiration Catalog

Because of what I do for a living (Fashion Consultant) I have to subscribe to MANY magazines. At any given time I have about 20 sitting around. My husband started getting really irritated so I started ripping out the pictures of things that I liked and then putting them in plastic pockets and again in binders that were pretty that I could put on the book shelf. Sometimes I'd find nothing to pull from a magazine and other times I was pulling something from every other page. I was starting to develop my own 'magazine' of just things I liked. What I noticed is that I would not only refer to these pictures for reference for work but I'd refer to them also as personal inspiration of what to wear and how. Even Fashion Consultants need inspiration. And so the Inspiration Catalog was born.

It's something I highly recommend my clients do because it's a way of gaining knowledge of how to pair things differently than you'd usually do. You can also easily start to develop what YOUR personal style is this way. I refer often to my inspiration catalog if I'm stuck on what to wear or if I know something is missing from my wardrobe but I just don't know what.

All you need are clippings from catalogs and magazines of things you like (it could be a color, texture, accessory, product, tutorial), plastic pocket covers and a 3 ring binder. I've attached a picture of my own so you can get an idea.

The 'Oh Sh!t I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR' shopping trip

Been there? Standing in front of your closet starring aimlessly at hanging items, not really focusing on anything specific because you know it's not there. The feeling of panic growing stronger and stronger. The realization coming over you. You don't want to have to face it but you have not choice.
OH Sh!t I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!
I just had that moment yesterday. The weather FINALLY shifted from Spring 60's to summer 70's and I realized I was completely unprepared. I did bust out my spring/summer storage containers, however last spring/summer I had just had a baby and my body was in 'transition' as I like to call it. So everything I took out was now 2 sizes or more too big for me (yes, that did feel good but it didn't make my situation any better). I have four client meetings this week and the weather is suppose to only get warmer. What did I do...I went on a panic shopping trip. Those are THE WORST kind shopping trips to go on because you NEED something. The cards are stacked against you already. Well we've all been in this situation and it's one that is necessary to address so here are some tips on how to approach it.
First:

BREATHE Get your barrings. You will be okay. You will not have to walk out your door naked. I promise.

Shop the Classics

You can't go wrong with the classics. They are timeless and simple. You'll be able to take that item and then pair it with something existing in your closet for sure!

If you don't already have a 'Little Black Dress' or the basic blazer, adding this item can create a multitude of new outfits.

Remember there are seasonal LBD's and Basic Blazers.

Avoid shopping for 'tough to fit' items

If jeans are hard to fit for you don't head out looking for your next 'it' pair. You're just setting yourself up for disaster and heartache.

Shop for items that you know you won't have a difficult time finding the right fit. And if all else fails jewelry doesn't have a size to it and can change up an outfit dramatically.

Accessories change an entire outfit

A pair of shoes, a scarf, some earrings....

Pairing a seasonal piece of jewelry with existing items in your wardrobe can breathe new life to it.

AND jewelry can be super affordable.

DON'T try something new

This is NOT the time ladies to get adventurous and try something new.
Yes you need something new but 9x's out of 10 you're going to buy something that just isn't you, you aren't going to wear, and it doesn't look good on you.

Step away from the sales associate telling you you look 'A-MA-Zing in that'. wink.

Stick to shopping for unique and different items when you've got less of a panic going on and more of your wits about you.

So what did I end up with? Two blazers: a navy linen blazer and a white with blue ticking (dotted stripes) (season Basic Blazers) , two tee's (classics), a raffia fedora hat in neutral color, a pair of gold and white bone and black bead earrings (accessories). I will be going through my Inspiration Binder soon to create my list of shopping items so I won't have that 'Oh Sh!t' feeling again!

Planes, Trains and Cashmere

So I've been hired to travel up to Seattle to do a Closet Consultation and some coordinating for a clients up coming trip. I'll be traveling by train three and half hours up and the three and half back. It got me thinking about what I was going to wear. I need to look professional, stylish, but for me, I HAVE to be comfortable. So what am I considering...

Jersey Knit- The BEST fabric for travel...it's comfortable, flattering and can be dressed up with a pump and blazer or down with some flat sandals or even flip flops.

Blazers with STRETCH!- The stretch is the most important. The lycra or stretch in your jacket will allow for movement but it also helps with decreasing wrinkles.

I HEART Theory. I KNOW it's spendy but you'll wear this jacket AT LEAST once a week.
FIT is so important! Should fit like a glove but feel like a sweatshirt

Cashmere Wrap- Adds a sense or drama and chic-ness to any outfit but also is functional! Unwrap it and throw it over your legs to keep you warm.
Remember to choose a color that flatters you! Biggest mistake people make is to choose a color they like but may not be flattering.

Summer is coming and with summer always come the nautical stripes and straw totes. But how do you wear this awesome seasonal accessory? Here are some suggestions:

The Neutral
The bag:

Neutral in color and style. This handbag has a beautiful shape and detail to it. It's soft in shape without being too schlumpy. I LOVE the gold hardware detail and the rope straps. This is a bag you'll have season to season.
This is something you can wear wear dressier (the gold really dresses this bag up) or extremely casual ( straw is generally a more causal choice and the rope handle adds to the causal factor).
TIP: Make sure that the bag isn't too LARGE or little for your frame. If it's extremely out of proportion to your body type it will make you look either silly or you'll look like a BIG person with a litle bag.

If you don't want the total casual feel of all straw then choose a bag that's leather and straw and has a more traditional handbag feel. This bag has beautiful butter soft leather as well as straw and has a great structured shape that won't sag when you add items to it.
TIP: If you go with leather and straw make sure the leather isn't really cheap looking. You can find leather imitations that look more real and hold up great with water splashes. In saying that, this isn't the best choice for a 'by the pool' bag.

A client of mine just posed this question to me and it's one I hear SO often. You don't want to have to suffer in the shoes you wear, you want them to be comfortable, functional but for the benefit of what I do...please let them be stylish.

The key point is this: You are what you wear..if your shoe is chunky and clunky, square and boxy,

that's what it will do to your overall look. It will make you look, chunky and clunky.

You want sleek, stylish and fashionable but STILL comfortable!

Ever seen a woman in uncomfortable shoes? I bet you never noticed much more about her outfit.

: Sleek Stylish

Do you see how the shoe on the left, though still a fun color is more visually heavy and clunky looking vs. the shoe on the right? Both are from a comfort brand and both are intended to be a comfort shoe.

So if you had a choice, would you want your look to be chunky and clunky or sleek and stylish? It's just a matter of choice. Truly.

Boot Shopping: Decoded

Some of us women have 'problems' they aren't problems we think we have, they are problems that our significant others think we have:) Some have a 'jewelry problem', others a 'purse problem', me I have a 'boot problem'. Again, to me it's not a problem but when my husband see's a new Frye Boot box on our bed, I have to prepare myself for another lecture that starts with something like this "Do you REALLY need ANOTHER pair of boots?" and finishes with "And how much did THOSE cost?". I know the game and I'm still willing to lay down the plastic for those beautiful, hand crafted, leather smelling, embellished boots! Not every boot works for everybody though. Here is some key pointers for you:
The Cowboy: Great for all body types. May be difficult to find a good fit if you have muscular calves.
This is my steadfast. You can wear it with dresses or jeans. The important aspect of making this purchase is that you buy ONLY something that is comfortable! There isn't anything worse than a boot that's uncomfortable. First it's going to make you walk funny which looks funny and that's NOT stylish! I personally like a narrow 'shaft' or body of a boot since have a narrow calf. Cowboy boots can be worn though with a wider shaft. If you have a wide calf a wider shaft will look more flattering than one that's tight on your calf. Not a good fit. You should be able to at least put a finger in the front and the back.
Embellishment on a cowboy boot can be cute but not for an everyday boot and it can look a little cheesy.
Ankle Cowboy: Good for longer legs and average to skinny ankles

This is a great boot and can really be very stylish. Again, buy quality and make sure you've got comfort. This boot isn't great for you if you have a wider ankle, it can make your leg look wider and cuts you off.
Same if you have short legs. This style can cut your leg off and make you look shorter than you are.
Pair with leggings or skinny jeans. Under your favorite jeans or with a casual dress.
The Motorcycle: Avoid if you have 'thicker' legs.
So on trend right now and one of my favorites but it's not for everyone. If you tend to dress more classically then this boot may not translate well into your wardrobe. It's a great boot for a my eclectic or trendy fashionistas wardrobe.
Looks great paired with a casual dress or over jeans. I do find it's a difficult boot to wear under jeans or pants because they usually have a wider shaft which can get caught up in the jean and disturbs the drape of your pant.
This isn't the best boot for you either if you have a wider ankle and calf.
The Classic: Great for ALL body types
If this is the case than a classic boot with shape at the ankle is best for your body type. It will define more shape at your ankle and compliment your leg shape. You can find boot shafts at different widths. You can always measure your calf as most sites will offer your the width of the shaft.
You want to look for leather NOT pleather and quality. It's better to spend good money for a good boot that will last you season after season instead of a cheap boot that looks cheap and won't last you very long.
You want the toe piece to be wide enough for comfort but sleek and stylish enough to compliment your foot. I always suggest a pointier toe to elongate your leg. If you think pointy shoes aren't comfortable then try a pair on one 1/2 size larger than your regular size. Pointy shoes can be comfortable I promise.
And the boot shaft should be skimming on your leg. Not too tight but absolutely not too large. Too large is an obvious ill fit.
Riding Boot: Good for ALL body types

: Riding Boot

The riding boot is another classic, though it's not styled quite as sleek as The Classic. The toe piece is generally a little wider and they most often come in a 1" heel.
the riding boot is GREAT to wear over jeans with an boyfriend cardigan or countered with a feminine but casual dress.
Make sure there is a shape at the ankle and the shaft is skimming your leg without being too tight or loss.
This IS a boot you want to invest in! I spent $175 for a pair of riding boots from Jcrew about 7 years ago and I STILL rock them! They are worn so perfectly and are SO comfortable!
Over the Knee: Great if you have long legs.
So on trend right now! This is a great and stylish boot if you have long legs! If you have shorter legs then I don't think this will be the most flattering for your figure. Being that it will hit above your knee, you want to make sure that it's not making your legs look shorter.
Pair this boot over a jean, legging or tight. It works with pants or dresses. You can invest in the over the knee because it ALWAYS comes back on trend. You want to keep the boot classic with little embellishment. It's enough drama that it's over the knee. Anything more can look a little trashy. Make sure you buy real leather and quality. You should be able to find these starting to go on sale soon. I know I've got my eyes open for that:)
The question of weather to buy black or brown is always a question I get and I do suggest one of each. I think black can be more formal and brown more casual. I do believe it's good to have a classic boot in both black and brown, especially if you're a classic style. They can be worn with EVERYTHING from skirts and suits to jeans and leggings.

Long hair? Change it UP...or down...

Long hair. Ahhh women with short hair may envy those with long locks. Those of us WITH long locks...we know the truth. We grew it long so we could throw it back in a ponytail everyday for the easy of a low maintenance style. The deal is, your missing out on the opportunity to use your HAIR as an accessory. And it's alot less expensive than that Marc Jacobs bag (I've been sweating) to update your outfit/look. Here are are a couple of suggestions.

: Hollywood Wave

What a great and glamorous look for a special occasion. Maybe a holiday party or even a date night. Just roll your hair up in curlers and when they're cool let them out and brush out your hair, smooth it over and maybe use a fine hairspray to keep it in place (not too much, you want movement)

: Chignon

A loose Chignon can be worn for dressy or even casual occasions. Put your hair in a loose ponytail and the nap of your neck and then twirl the tail part into a loose bun and fasten with bobby pins. It seriously takes 30 seconds and is SO stylish! Make sure you have a hair fastner and bobby pins that match your hair color.

: Braided

If you were like me and you learned to braid hair on your barbie doll then you know how to braid your own hair. It's SO easy to do and you can braid your hair in so many way. In front on both or either side. It's a great way to pull your hair away from your face which gives you a friendly and approachable energy.
If you don't know how to braid, call your buddy who does to come over and braid for you over a glass of wine. It's amazing what I'll do for a glass of wine with my chicas:)

: Side Pony

I mean how easy is this! Just put in a pony at the nap of your neck but a little to the side. If I have time I'll even throw in my curling iron on the tail part for a second to give it a little finished look.

: Hair Accessory

And easiest of all, throw in a hair accessory! A headband, comb, barret or even a decorative bobby pin. So easy with such a BIG impact! Make sure that your hair accessory matches your hair. If it's fancy make sure you've got your hair combed and curled but if it's more casual than so can your hair be.

Wet Wellies

The Classic: Can't go wrong with the classic. Choose the army green or black to keep it neutral OR have some FUN with a color! Just choose a color you can incorporate into most of your outfits!
A Twist on the Classic: Love these little rubber loafers! Pair these with some tights and cute skirt. Cute, not chunky AND functional! Great find Elyse!!
Go Bad Ass: Love this take on a biker boot by Micheal Kors! These have such personality. These would be great over a skinny denim even with a girly dress and leggings.
Flashy: LOVE these Vivienne Westwood rubber boots. These are some something I'd love to pull off myself but just couldn't. I can see these worn with some black tights, pencil skirt cashmere tneck and a GREAT statement colored leather jacket...maybe in a raspberry or bright yellow!
RUGGED: Go back woods with these Sperry boots. Love the juxtapos of pairing these with a girly dress or embrace the lumberjack look with skinny jeans and a plaid shirt. Just make sure that everything fits and has SHAPE or you WILL look like a lumber jack.
DO NOT!:
WHAT?: Really? How is a backless shoe going to keep you dry? Well at least your toes will be dry...right? Doesn't make sense.
For the bugs: I totally embrace the inner child...but we don't want that to reflect on the outside so literally. If you want fun then choose a more sophisticated but fun pattern and color for your boots.
There are SO MANY options to choose for a rubber boot! Just remember to wear them functionally. Wearing a rubber boot when it's a sunny fall day...doesn't make sense but a darling rubber boot when the monsoon arrives...great way to look cute and stay dry!

A quickie on shortie boots

I was out with a client of mine the other day and she had a question about short boots (they are so ON trend right now). She'd tried a number of different styles on but just hadn't found a pair that looked right...but why? After trying a pair of mid calf Frye's on for me my suspicions were confirmed. What the issue was..she has very nice muscular legs. The mid calf boot was hitting her mid calf (huh go figure) which was hiding the shape she has in her leg from the calf down which caused her leg to look thicker than it should.

What would look best on her leg was a true ankle boot. This would hit lower on her leg, therefore allowing the curve from her calf to her ankle to show thus allowing the shape of super nice legs to show.

Remember, this look, either the mid calf or the ankle, are best when worn with a skinny pant. This boot adds visual weight so you want to balance it out with something more narrow.

BOJS: Boots Over Jeans Syndrome

Okay ladies....this Personal Style Consultant has been stuck in a fashion rut. Yes it too can happen to us.wink. So in pondering what my deal is..just had a baby...still hanging on to the last 8 lbs...don't like what's out there...huh...what other excuse could I come up with..I realized that it was none of the above. I mean if I don't let YOU make excuses I certainly can't make them for myself, right!?
Thank GOD for some of my uber stylish girlfriends who are in or were in the shoe biz cuz they informed me JUST what the issue was. The BOJS (Boots over Jeans Syndrome). Go to a play date with all your girlfriends or happy hour at..well any bar and you'll see it. EVERY woman, chick or twit will be wearing skinny jeans with boots! It's become the next Juicy sweat suit! Generic, uninteresting and not original at all. But SO easy to just throw and go right!?
Well you know me...I have a boot PROBLEM but this was IT! I was feeling like I looked generic, uninteresting and completely uninspired. But was I willing to give up my tall boots!? Oh HELL no! So what's the answer?
1. Wear interesting boots that are NOT plain or uninteresting:
Check out the texture on this Kelsi Dagger boot!
Don't be afraid to play with texture as a 'story' I do this most of the time
This is over the knee and the hardware makes this NOT boring.
Careful if you're petite with the over the knee look. It can make you look like your legs got cut off they stuffed you in some boots. wink. If you must do this trend stick to at or just very over the knee..no thigh highs..
Choose a different silhouette! A booties or biker style boot can be just enough of a difference.
Or try something completely different! This is what I'm challenging myself to do more now! Just got these...

2. Pair your boots with something different than skinny jeans!!!

Love the idea of this paired with a double wrap belt, cashmere leggings, the Lisbon oxford and a leather jacket or long gray cardi.
How great would this be with a simple tee in say raspberry (color next to your face people), denim jacket and some biker boots?
Or how about this beautiful draped skirt with gray tights and a knit roll over booties? Pair with a warm merino wool t-neck sweater in a maroon and a wool military style jacket?
It doesn't take much change but a little tweak can be SO inspirational!!

I'm not sure if I'm happy to see the end of the 80's cycle or distraught to see the 70's rearing its UGLY head AGAIN!? There is a glamorous 70's and fun 70's but I'm alarmed with I see the UGLY 70's represented on the glossy pages of the magazines...case in point, the below the knee skirt length.
The only woman who can successfully pull this length off is truly one of those 'blow away if you sneeze' model types. You have to have enough height to carry that silhouette (5' 8" or taller) and IF you're lucky to have that height you'd better have some great ankles to show off!
The good news is, I haven't seen this length IN the stores yet so it may just blow over like the MC hammer pants did. Though take that example as warning...it may be back for a second go just like the MC hammer pants did and I OWN a pair! Ugh oh. wink

I'm 32 not 23.....

A subject was brought up with a recent client that I wanted to address. 'What do you do when you look 23 but really are 32? I know BIIIIGGG freak'n problem right. Especially in a world when most of us are trying to look 23 again. wink. But in the professional or dating world when you're looking to gain respect or make an impression, one of immaturity may not be the desired effect. So here are some tips on how to dress so you CAN make that sophisticated, got it together, first impression.
What to AVOID VS What to HAVE
PUFFY sleeves SCREAMS I'm 12. Remember you are what you wear so if you wear cutesy your going to look cutesy and if you're trying to look more sophisticated then it's not the silhouette for you. This IS NOT saying that everyone should avoid a puff sleeve but if you're trying to look more sophisticated...

A clean line silhouette that speaks 'sophistication' is what to HAVE. Nothing about this top says too cutesy or too young.

Too youthful print. Again, "you are what you wear"so choose sophisticated graphics NOT super girly youthful prints you'd see on a child or tween.

Choose a pattern that is still fun but more sophisticated is much more appropriate. Ask yourself,"What does this pattern say?". You will have an answer...if you're questioning, that means it isn't right. Trust your instincts.

Too tight too short, ill fitting. Need I say more. But I will. wink. Ill fitting clothes make you look ignorant. We all know when something doesn't fit right...you DO!

FIT is THE MOST important element to personal style period but when clothes are ill fitting or you look like you're trying to squeeze into something it is NOT age appropriate.

Beware of where your ruffles are and how much you were frilling. Too much frill is too much.

Do ruffles AWAY from your face and in a way that's more sophisticated. Again ask yourself "is this sophisticated or not" question it? It probably isn't right.

So the key here is this, if you want to LOOK sophisticated then WEAR sophisticated. Avoid anything too tight, too short or too sparkly but HAVE FUN! I am not saying wear boring because let me tell you, we mature women are anything but boring! wink.

For the vertically challenged...

I have a number of petite clients and a FEEL for them! The world is just not built for a petite woman, especially if she wants to be dressed! I mean first of all...where can you find petite made clothing other than the stand-by Nordstrom, Banana and Ann Taylor. What if you actually want something that is different than what 80% of the world is wearing?
Being that I'm a Fashion Consultant, you think I have an answer for this but...I don't. I'm just the consultant..not the retailer. I have to work with what they give me. I wish I had a direct line to every manufacturer out there.
Here is what I can offer though.
If you're petite here are the rules you mainly need to stick to in order to make the most of your petite stature.
1. You are not tall...get over it. Love your petite self! If you can't change it...accept it.

2. Show off your legs! Skirts and Dresses need to be no longer than at your knee.

3. A heel of any height can be your best friend

4. If you're petite, wear petite, avoid over sized silhouettes, jackets, pants and large prints.

5. Draw the eye UP! Avoid cuffed pants wide legs, detail at the bottom. Wear color, prints, patterns and textures up by your face.

6. Keep your line as streamline as you can, don't cut yourself in half.

7. IF you need to wear a cropped pant..wear one no shorter than your ankle unless it's a short.

I've learned from being so tall that whatever it is you've got/don't have, you have to accept and make the most of it. That works well with just about every scenario one would come to in life. :)

Need to be ready and stylish in 15..just throw a hat on it...

So I wear hats SO often..not JUST because they're stylish but because they're EASY to...say it all together...

THROW and GO!

Here is where I keep my hats

Easy to grab n go! Mind you, I haven't transitioned into my spring/summer hats yet. I need to shop too! wink.

So what hat style might look good on you? Never fear, I've broken it down for you simply and easily AND did some shopping

LONG FACES

A wide brim is best for long narrow faces. Draws the eye out. Putting a slight angle to your hat

can be so stylish too!

Avoid anything too top tall and narrow at the brim. It will just exploit your long lovely shape

SQUARE SHAPED FACES

Hats with a soft line to them will balance the sharp angles of someone with

a square jawline. It's great because you can go OH SO dramatic:)

Avoid: Small and boxy shapes. Fedoras are okay...best worn with a little angle to them though.

ROUND SHAPED FACES

It's important to keep the crown a little taller to give your face shape some

height. You'll also counter the round of your shape by wearing you hat at a slight angle.

AVOID: droopy bucket hats...or TOO floppy of any kind of hat, it will

look like your head is being swallowed up:)

OVAL FACES

Just about any style of hat looks great on an oval shaped face. So ROCK it!!

Q: What's the hat shape that can universally look good on just about anyone?

A: The Fedora looks good on everyone.

Well I can't just preach to you on what to wear right? Here are a few choice outfits I've selected to share with you:

: Hiding the after effects of baby #2

I'm 5'11" tall so I used an A-line over sized tank top to 'hide' the baby belly I was still rocking.

Because my tank was so over sized..I had to balance it out with a slim or skinny pant.

I wore this for a shopping session with a client.

: Off to the coffee shop to so some work

Bad hair day so I threw on this camel colored hat. Boyfriend style cords in a peach color, white

v-neck tee from American Apparel and my trusty YANUK denim jacket and sandals.

: My version of a trench coat

I just can't do a traditional trench..not me but I found this army green trench

at Nordstrom that I LOVE! It has a dramatic color that gives it such personality. I can easlily

pair it with some slouchy jeans, a lightweight cream sweater and my sand loafers.

Off to run errands in this outfit.

: Are those faux glasses?

I got these faux fashion glasses because I just needed something extra for my casual

outfits. I'm finding as a mother of two boys now, there is NO time get ready..

everything has to be what I call 'throw and go ready'. You have to throw it on..and go.

Off to a Closet Consultation in this outfit.

: East side Mama

Channeling my East Side Hipster side:) Skinny jeans with a navy henley but layered my

hoodie under my leather jacket and paired with my ankle cowboy boots for some personality:)

Ugh, this winter has been SO gray and dreary! I needed to wear something

floral to boost my moral. Paired one of my spring/summer dresses over

some wool tights I have and pulled on my dark green motorcycle jacket and a scarf

I woke up the other day to this blinding shine coming from my bedroom window, just beating down on my face. What was this bright light? It feel so familiar. I was quick to realize it's was the sun! It's back! I jumped on my feet, scampered to my closet like a kid on the first day of school, threw open the doors and stood there for five minutes...realizing...I Oh MY GOD! I HAVE NOTHING TO WEAR!!! So here I am writing to you...what do I do...where do I start? I'm so overwhelmed.

You crack me up girl! Yes the sun is on it's way back to visit for a few months (at least, fingers crossed). First of all that overwhelmed feeling is totally normal. Take a deep breathe and follow my lead...you will be at the other side of the fashion frenzie in no time!
1. Check out some online boutiques and magazines or catalogs and pull looks that you like, colors you like, accessories etc. Start to collect a folder of these looks. I actually put mine in a binder (see picture). You don't want to start shopping without having some direction or you'll have a wardrobe of pieces and not outfits.

2. Get down your spring wardrobe storage containers ( I know you separate your seasons in your closet..oh you don't...you should!) BEFORE you put your spring clothes into your closet you should review them one by one and follow this series of questions:

Does this FIT me anymore?
Doesn this FLATTER me anymore? Note: Clothes that are worn out DO NOT flatter you.
Does this still FUNCTION or have FUNCTION in my lifestyle? (many pieces I had got donated after I had kids)
Does this still make me feel FABULOUS? Sometimes the love affair is over...and it's time to move on to the next love affair.

Okay. Not before you go adding all those Flatter, Fabulous fashions back to your wardrobe you need to do the same with your existing wardrobe:

Fit?
Flatter?
Function? Winter items...need to be boxed and stored away.
Fabulous?

THEN and only then, do you add the Spring items to your wardrobe and you assess what you've got. You'll probably find that some of the styles you picked for your binder this spring are items you already have. What do you NOT have that you pulled out of each magazine or online boutique you checked out? For me it's been cat eye sunglasses and maxi dresses. So I KNOW I need to find these two pieces for my wardrobe...see what those items are for you and NOW you've got a mission!

Remember though, the 3:1 rule while you're out shopping. You find one piece you love and you have to make three existing outfits from your closet with this new item you're considering...this way you'll have a functional wardrobe!
